A prickly problem

For parents and baby alike, diaper rash is, indeed, a sore subject. Nearly all babies get diaper rash at some time. Diaper rash is typically caused by dampness inside the diaper, which provides an ideal breeding ground for ammonia-causing bacteria. These bacteria irritate baby's sensitive skin, producing a red pimply rash.

Left untreated, a simple rash cam advance into large blisters, and sometimes, seborrhea or a bacterial or yeast infection will result. (These conditions require you to see your pediatrician for additional treatment.)

The good news, however, is that a lot can be done to prevent simple diaper rash, and to minimize baby's discomfort if it does occur.

For Starters

A number of regular preventative measures should help minimize your baby's chances of getting a rash in the first place:

1. Avoid the use of rubber pants with cloth diapers. If using cloth diapers, wash them in a mild soap and rinse thoroughly. Avoid fabric softener and be careful of some laundry detergents and bleaches - these can sometimes irritate baby's skin.
2. If using disposable diapers, make sure they're large enough for baby so that there's "breathing room" at the legs.
3. Try to give the baby's bottom some uncovered "air time" each day (after bath or between diaper changes.)
4. Cleanse the diaper area thoroughly after each change, with warm water and gentle soap. Pay special attention to the folds of the skin. Allow baby's bottom to dry thoroughly before replacing diaper.
5. Apply a thin layer of soothing ointment (such as Dr. Sirlin's^®) to the baby's bottom. This creates a moisture-proof barrier. Avoid powders - they do little to protect, and are dangerous to baby if inhaled.
